Elkridge, MD (PRWEB) March 26, 2009

The economic crisis is taking a significant toll on Maryland hospitals, causing their finances to slide to unprecedented low levels during the final quarter of 2008. Maryland hospitals’ total margins dropped to negative 13.5 percent between October 1 and December 31, 2008, compared to 2.2 percent during the same time in 2007. Hospitals’ total margins had already fallen to a negative 2.5 percent in the quarter ending September 30, 2008. Total margins measure the overall financial condition of Maryland’s hospitals, which are almost exclusively not-for-profit facilities.

“At the very time when the economy is forcing more Marylanders to turn to hospitals for their only source of health care, the economy is crippling Maryland hospitals’ ability to meet the growing demand,” Carmela Coyle, MHA President and CEO, said. “That means hospitals have significantly less money to hire new staff, invest in new services and programs or technology, to upgrade buildings, or to help physicians.”

The situation in Maryland is far worse than for hospitals nationwide, where the deficit for total margins was negative 7.8 percent for the final three months of 2008.

Thirty-four Maryland hospitals sustained overall losses during that three-month period totaling $ 466 million, according to a new financial analysis by the Maryland Hospital Association.

Most of hospitals’ losses resulted from increases in interest rates, losses on returns, and other increases in costs needed to provide financing to upgrade or expand programs and to underwrite the costs of new technology. Operating margins–which measure financial performance in providing care–while dropping, did not fall as precipitously. Overall operating margins in the fourth quarter of 2008 were 1.5 percent–down from 2.4 percent in the quarter ending September 30. That is well below the rate-setting commission’s target of 2.75 percent and below the 1.8 percent operating margins for hospitals nationwide for the quarter ending December 31.

The losses Maryland hospitals face are forcing them to limit their purchases of new technology and equipment, and to delay upgrades in information technology according to a new MHA survey. Hospitals also report adopting, or considering, hiring freezes and staff reductions; eliminating vacant positions; and cutting administrative spending, including educational and meeting expenses. In addition, hospitals report the losses have led to a significant increase in hospitals’ pension liability costs.

Furthermore, the survey found the economy is forcing more and more physicians to approach hospitals for financial support, ranging from widespread requests for hospital employment to nearly universal requests for pay increases to provide services to hospitals. In 2008 hospitals provided $ 210 million in support to physicians.

“With a physician shortage particularly intense in inner city Baltimore and rural parts of the state, financial support for doctors is vital to assure access to care in these areas,” Coyle said.

“Hospitals are the bedrocks of our communities, both as providers of health care to all who need assistance and as the economic engines for our communities,” Coyle added. “Anything that weakens our hospitals poses a threat to the economy of Maryland and the well-being of our state.”

MHA is the advocate for Maryland hospitals, health systems, and their patients before legislative and regulatory bodies. Its membership is comprised of community and teaching hospitals, health systems, specialty hospitals, veterans hospitals, and long-term care facilities. For more information, visit MHA’s Web site.

Plastic Surgeon in Leesburg, VA Discusses Mommy Makeover Popularity

Leesburg, VA (PRWEB) January 24, 2012

Plastic Surgeon Behzad Parva, MD says he has seen an increase at his practice in the number of women seeking plastic surgery in Leesburg, VA, particularly among those who are of child-bearing age. According to a recent survey by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), over 325,000 mommy makeover procedures were performed nationally on women ages 20 to 39. The ASPS statistics also show that if cost were not an issue, 62% of moms say they would consider a mommy makeover.

Dr. Parva says the mommy makeover procedures have become increasingly popular as media focus continues to idealize attractive mothers through television shows such as The Swan and The Real Housewives. However, he also adds that despite attention from these shows, most of his post-baby patients simply want to restore their bodies to the way they were before having children. Dr. Parva says he has seen evidence of this popularity as mommy makeover procedures have increased dramatically at his practice in the past few years. “As I meet with moms from all walks of life, a common theme I hear is their desire to reverse the physical changes that resulted from pregnancy. Active, energetic moms want to restore body balance and reclaim their youthful appearance so it is a true reflection of how they feel inside.”

Over the past decade, procedures associated with mommy makeovers have experienced dramatic leaps in popularity, according to the ASPS study. Tummy tucks have increased by 85% since 2000, breast lifts by 70%, and breast augmentation by 39%. In particular, Dr. Parva says breast augmentation in Leesburg has seen significant growth since 2009 and is now the most popular procedure at his office. For post-partum women, re-establishing breast volume through implants can provide a significant boost in self-confidence when a mom is left with a reduced volume in the breast after pregnancy and nursing.

Because of the rise in the number of procedures performed and the overall demand for plastic surgery, Dr. Parva says the risk of “fad” plastic surgery and inexperienced plastic surgeons also increases. He suggests researching extensively to find the best options for a personalized and successful treatment.

For patients considering a mommy makeover, Dr. Parva says he recommends patients consult with a surgeon who is board certified in plastic surgery in order to ensure they have the proper experience and qualifications. He also says that being specific about post-baby body goals can help patients choose the appropriate procedures that will offer them lasting and quality results. “Confirm that the plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and that he or she performs breast and body rejuvenation procedures often, with consistent, good results. A relationship should also be established that gives the patient peace and confidence in the quality and personalized care they will receive from the plastic surgeon and the entire staff.”

About Behzad Parva, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Behzad Parva graduated Magna Cum Laude from Westminster College and received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his General Surgery residency at Temple University Hospital and his Plastic Surgery residency at Indiana University Medical Center. In addition to being a Plastic Surgery Research Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Parva is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) July 27, 2011

Sleep Group Solutions (SGS), a leader in dental continuing education, takes pride in offering Dentists top level courses on Dental Sleep Medicine. With proper education on sleep apnea a must, SGS has teamed up with the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines(ACSDD) to offer 16 continuing education credits to seminar attendees interested in attaining ACSDD Diplomate status.

The ACSDD is recognized as the leader in training and accreditation through the transformation of cutting-edge evidence-based sleep-disorders knowledge and clinical excellence into patient-friendly experiences. Diplomates of the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines have earned this designation by successfully completing a rigorous educational, experiential and testing process. Applicants are required to fulfill 45 hours of continuing professional education. Applicants can now attend an SGS seminar on Dental Sleep Medicine, and the 16 CE credits can be applied to the ACSDD Diplomate application continuing education requirement .

“Finding education partners who want to make a difference and provide strong, quality continuing education is always the desire of the ACSDD. We want our Diplomate candidates to be well-trained with the necessary CE’s required in order to submit their application for Diplomate consideration. Our review of the Dental Sleep Medicine course provided by SGS meets our standards,” Dr. Michael Krahe, Founder & Executive Director of the ACSDD explains on accepting SGS courses towards Diplomate status. Dr. Krahe went on to say, “There are lots of courses out there, but finding quality courses is always a huge issue and consideration. The SGS Dental Sleep Medicine course fits the bill as quality.”

The feeling is mutual for Sleep Group Solutions. This affiliation will be the first of its kind for SGS, and they have chosen wisely to team up with the best. “SGS is pleased to have our dental sleep medicine courses count towards the ACSDD Diplomate credentialing process. The Dental Sleep Medicine field is exploding and it’s great to see a fantastic organization like the ACSDD embrace the latest medical / dental knowledge and education as part of their programs. This young organization has an impressive list of accomplished faculty, advisors, Diplomates and members, and we are happy that our education program meets the standards of their Diplomate credential,” said John Nadeau, VP of SGS. Mr. Nadeau also added, “We look forward to working with our existing clients in the ACSDD as well as introducing new dentists to the Academy.”

Here is some advice for doctors interested in attaining Diplomate status: “First, find the right organization to affiliate with. Talk to your colleagues. Find an organization that represents you, as a member, and provides quality training that is rigorous and convenient for you.” suggests Dr. Krahe.

Center City, MN (PRWEB) April 20, 2011

Hazelden, one of the world’s largest and most respected private, nonprofit alcohol and drug addiction treatment centers, announced today that it will open an outpatient clinic in Maple Grove, Minn., on May 2, 2011.

“For more than 60 years, Hazelden has helped people find freedom from addiction to alcohol and other drugs,” says Mark G. Mishek, president and CEO of Hazelden. “Now we look forward to bringing our unmatched treatment and recovery services to the Twin Cities’ west Metro community.”

Hazelden’s newest outpatient clinic, located at 7001 East Fish Lake Road in Maple Grove, will initially offer an evening/weekend outpatient addiction treatment for up to 20 adults. Recovery-sensitive mental health services, chemical dependency assessments and continuing care groups will also be available at the clinic.

“The need for outpatient addiction treatment programming continues to grow,” observes Mishek. Hazelden’s outpatient programs are offered at convenient times and locations so that clients can balance treatment with daily work and family obligations.

“Addiction is a devastating disease. It affects people of all ages, from all walks of life, tearing apart families and destroying lives,” says Mishek. “But addiction can be treated and managed for life—and nobody knows how better than Hazelden.”

Hazelden currently has residential and/or outpatient addiction treatment facilities in Center City, Plymouth, and St. Paul, Minn., as well as Chicago, New York City, Newberg, Ore., and Naples, Fla.

Bedford, NH (PRWEB) January 14, 2012

Home Care Assistance of New Hampshire, the leading provider of in-home care for seniors throughout the state, is proud to announce the Hospital to Home Care program, a comprehensive set of educational resources for families managing the difficult transition home after hospitalization. The program helps families prepare for discharge, manage the unique needs of post-hospitalization patients and coordinate recovery at home.

“Our Hospital to Home Care initiative is a wonderful program designed to help seniors and their families navigate the hospital discharge process,” said Lauren Robison, Owner of Home Care Assistance of New Hampshire. “This process can be both time consuming and frustrating to patients. For this reason, we created a suite of information to facilitate and reduce the pressure experienced by patients and families alike.”

The program is supported by the book, From Hospital to Home Care, written by Home Care Assistance co-founders Dr. Kathy Johnson, Dr. James Johnson and Lily Sarafan. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges and resources associated with each step in the transition from hospital to the home, explains the discharge process from an inpatient hospital stay, outlines common issues associated with specific medical conditions, discusses the unique needs of recently hospitalized patients and emphasizes the importance of home care in patient outcomes and quality of life. Home Care Assistance is also excited to unveil HospitaltoHomeCare.com, a free online resource for families seeking information about the discharge process and recovery at home.

“The entire Hospital to Home Care program is anchored in the belief that patients can recover and rehabilitate at home following a hospitalization,” said Lily Sarafa, Executive President of Home Care Assistance. “Our clients benefit tremendously from a familiar home environment and their families enjoy peace of mind knowing that trained professionals are on hand to support their loved ones.”

Hospital to Home Care is part of a long-term initiative at Home Care Assistance to encourage recovery and rehabilitation at home while reducing avoidable hospital readmissions. Alongside the psychological and emotional benefits of recovery at home, patients also benefit from dedicated one-on-one support from a caregiver. In addition, patients avoid the infection risk associated with care facilities and enjoy greater freedom outside of an institutional setting.

“Our mission at Home Care Assistance is to change the world ages,” said Sarafan. “We have been able to help countless clients with their post-hospitalization recovery at home and now we’ve been able to transfer that expertise into informative resources for the public. By encouraging patients to recover at home and reducing avoidable hospital readmissions, we hope to re-shape how families and health professionals think about post-hospitalization care.”

From Hospital to Home Care: A Step by Step Guide to Providing Care to Patients Post Hospitalization is available for pre-order on Amazon.com for $ 17.95. A 16-page PDF guide to the discharge and recovery process is available for free at http://www.HospitaltoHomeCare.com.

NYC physician

New York, NY (PRWEB) December 21, 2011

Upper East Side doctor, Dr. Marina Gafanovich is part of the preventative care movement in the health industry that promotes education and disease prevention techniques. Her practice philosophy revolves around educating patients in healthy lifestyles and wellness activities. This holiday season Dr. Gafanovich would like to promote the Centers for Disease Control’s Holiday Health Drive by promoting their: Million Hearts Initiative, as well as, warn her patients about issues related to holiday travel.

“Family members worry about loved ones who are at risk for heart disease or stroke,” said Janet Wright, M.D., executive director of Million Hearts. “When someone pledges to learn how to improve their health, we show respect for ourselves and the lives we share with others. Nothing shows our love like actions that allow us to enjoy the seasons together for years to come.”

The CDC hopes that this program will prevent 1 million heart attacks and/or strokes across the US over the next 1 to 5 years. Part of the pledge is to accept responsibility for health and embrace a healthier lifestyle with a focus on wellness.

Dr. Gafanovich’s Upper East Side physician’s practice specializes in creating healthy living plans and wellness programs for all her patients. She believes that regular physical exams are essential to discovering minor health issues before they grow into major problems. “You’ll find more and more health and fitness magazines writing articles about the importance of physical exams in improving and maintaining health,” she tells us. “Catching the warning signals for heart disease is invaluable. Looking for clues and warning signs for future problems is an important part of what I do as a doctor. So many chronic issues in older men and women could have been prevented or diminished had they changed just a few details of their lives when they were younger.”

Most Physicians in New York who specialize in internal medicine will provide some sort of preventative care, but not all do so with the zeal and almost religious devotion to it of Dr. Gafanovich.

“My practice was handed down to me by two doctors who were great believers in an integrated, humanist approach to medicine. They believed that the practice of medicine had become more about putting out fires than preventing them. I knew when I took over the practice that I had a duty to both my patients and these two men who gave me such an important foundation in approach,” she says. “I decided that I would always treat people, not diseases.”

This humanist approach to medicine is exactly what patients will find at the Upper East Side physicians office of Dr. Gafanovich. Short wait times, friendly and compassionate service, and a doctor that cares about the lives of her patients.

Dr. Marina Gafanovich is a board certified internist practicing in the City of New York. She has attending privileges at both New York Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center and at North Shore University Hospital. She has been ranked a #1 Internist in New York by prestigious consumer opinion organizations like “Health Grades”, “Wellness”, “Avvo”, and “CitySearch”.

Her office is located on 1550 York Avenue, New York NY 10028. She may be contacted by dialing: (212) 249-6218. http://www.mynycdoctor.com
