DENVER (PRWEB) December 27, 2005 –

December 27, 2005 – Chronic liver disease affects approximately 10 percent of the United States population, an estimated 30 million people. Researchers at academic medical centers and scientists at pharmaceutical companies are constantly refining therapies and developing new ones. Managers of population health, including public health officials and state Medicaid directors, also face the challenge of liver disease. They must identify and register target populations and introduce evidence-based best practices to improve the care process. Academic medical centers and population health managers need a large national database on liver diseases in order to improve understanding of the natural history of liver diseases, track outcomes, evaluate treatment alternatives, and identify effective approaches to managing the substantial costs of care.

To meet this need, the Liver Research Institute (LRI) launched the Liver Disease Registry, the largest national database of liver diseases, in 2004. LRI is committed to providing domain knowledge, project management expertise and data management technology to improve care and outcomes for people with liver disease. LRI established the registry in partnership with the leaders of five preeminent liver disease centers (University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Health System, University of North Carolina School of Medicine-Chapel Hill, New England Medical Center-Tufts Medical School, Georgetown University Hospital and Medical School and the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System-Medical College of Virginia).

In 2005, the Liver Disease Registry reached a total of 44,655 records. The data include: individual identifier codes, patient age and sex, demographic information (race and ethnicity), primary and secondary co-morbid diagnoses, liver function test results, liver biopsy data, prior treatment history, current therapies and medications, and outcomes. All sites contributing data to the Liver Disease Registry must have the prior approval of their Institutional Review Boards, and patient data are managed in accordance with HIPPA privacy regulations.

“The Liver Disease Registry affords us the opportunity to participate in essential data collection along with several other prominent centers for liver disease research and patient care,” said K. Rajender Reddy, M.D., director of hepatology and medical director of liver transplantation, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. “We are using the data for important research, and our participation in the registry strongly positions our group for new clinical trials.”

In 2006, the second phase of the operation of the Liver Disease Registry will begin. Up to 20 additional academic sites will be added, and LRI also plans to involve community physicians who treat liver disease.

“The Liver Disease Registry is an invaluable resource for clinical trials and basic research, including evaluating the feasibility of new studies and identifying potential study subjects,” said Stephen E. Steinberg, M.D., medical director, Liver Research Institute. “As a resource for government agencies and large health care provider organizations, the registry provides indispensable data for analysis to bridge the gap between the identification of health problems in population-based data and the actual implementation of best practices.”

About the Liver Research Institute (LRI)

The Liver Research Institute (LRI), headquartered in Denver, Colo., is committed to providing domain knowledge, project management expertise and data management technology to improve care and outcomes for people with liver disease. LRI develops and manages medical information about diseases of the liver and provides the tools and methodology to reach those caring for patients. Thus, LRI partners with population health managers to design, implement and manage projects and programs that advance the efficiency and effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment and thereby improve outcomes and reduce costs for people with liver disease. The benefits? Initiatives tailored to each client’s unique challenges, projects that achieve enduring and scaleable results: measured and benchmarked improvements in patient care and outcomes – and lower costs.

Elmsford, NY (PRWEB) May 16, 2012

Digiscribe International, provider of document scanning services, document management solutions and workflow automation throughout the New York metro area, continues to expand operations by hiring an experienced enterprise content management (ECM) professional and former IBMer, Ryan Kadri.

The need of organizations throughout the Northeast to control costs relating to manually processing paper documents has exploded in recent years. Commercial, healthcare, education, and non-profit organizations all need to eliminate inefficiencies now more than ever. They need new ways to minimize errors and costly processes related to invoices, employee records, client files, and medical records. Digiscribe offers a wide breadth of office automation solutions and services to help any enterprise deal with these issues, including hospitality establishments, medical facilities, schools, and distributors. The addition of Kadri strengthens Digiscribe’s ability to reach more people throughout these organizations, from operations to accounts payable to human resources.

As an award-winning salesperson with a long track record of meeting client needs with customized solutions, Kadri joins Digiscribe with eight years of experience utilizing technology to increase efficiency and cut costs for Fortune 500 companies. His achievements include earning a #1 ranking out of 128 commercial reps throughout the nation for Lanier Worldwide. Kadri was an 8-time District Manager of the Month for ADP, where he also launched their flagship platform, “Workforce Now HR Services.” Most recently, Kadri was responsible for managing IBM ECM solutions for the retail, manufacturing and wholesale distribution markets throughout the New York metro area.

“We are thrilled to have Ryan join our growing team of document management professionals. He is a talented office automation professional that analyzes needs and provides practical, cost-effective solutions to his clients. We have grown tremendously in the last two years and are eager to help provide solutions to as many organizations as we can. We believe Ryan will help us get to the next level by taking the operational efficiency of our clients to the next level, and we are eager to see what he can do,” said Mitch Taube, Digiscribe President.

“I’m excited to be part of an organization as successful as Digiscribe and to help them expand their document management initiative, like I did for Lanier, ADP and IBM,” said Kadri. “While ECM technology is far from new, Digiscribe’s advanced document capture, OCR, document management, invoice processing, and workflow automation solutions are now so cost-effective that even small businesses can take advantage of what was once only available to the biggest firms, and I look forward to making these solutions more widely available.”

When he’s not solving complex problems with ECM technology, you’re likely to find Kadri skiing the backcountry in the wilderness as part of Tailgate Alaska, coaching middle school football and basketball or traveling in Europe utilizing his native French language skills.

Evansville, IN (PRWEB) July 26, 2011

In July 2011, Washington High School (WHS) reports success of ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) screening for concussions performed by Keith Tebbe, ProRehab’s Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) dedicated to WHS. ImPACT is the most widely used and most scientifically sound computerized concussion evaluation system available for athletes. ProRehab Certified Athletic Trainers and physical therapists provide critical education and concussion identification via ImPACT screening for student athletes.

Sport-induced brain injuries, such as concussions, are a recent hot topic in the media. The long term effects of head trauma are now becoming evident among athletes of all levels. Dave Duerson, Chicago Bears 1985 Superbowl Champion, committed suicide earlier this year. Some have attributed his suicide to concussion damage to his brain.

In June 2011, the American Journal of Sport Medicine estimates that 1.6-3.8 million concussions occur everyone year in the United States. As medical professionals continue to learn more about concussions, their causes, and effective treatments, it is clear that it is imperative to accurately identify concussions to determine proper treatment. Neurological screens, such as ImPACT, can play a large role in accurate concussion identification.

A 2010 study in the Journal of Pediatrics reports that student athlete traumatic brain injuries have increased 70% from 1997-2007. More than one-third of the student basketball players in the same study did not recognize concussion symptoms or report them to their athletic trainers. If athletes return to play without proper healing time they can experience staggering neurological injury or even death.

“Helmets are not really designed to stop concussions, they are design to stop skull fractures and lacerations,” says Tebbe. “ImPACT screening is a great mechanism for making sure that athletes get back on track. If not treated properly, concussions are life threatening, so we take these screens very seriously and recommend them to all athletes, no matter their sport. Bottom line, it’s not worth it not use these screens.”

The Certified Athletic Trainers at ProRehab provide ImPACT screening during the pre-season to measure brain abilities. The Certified Athletic Trainers are also present at student athletic events. If an injury occurs they can immediately compare the student’s pre-season brain abilities to his or her current abilities. This helps to identify symptoms and the severity of the concussion. ProRehab then refers athletes, as needed, to doctors who specialize in the treatment of these injuries.

“With 2-a-days starting up very soon for football players in Evansville, parents and coaches should think about the ImPACT screens,” continues Tebbe. “ProRehab’s ATC’s can perform these screens quickly, in about 20 minutes and can save athletes from potential problems in the future.”

ProRehab Certified Athletic Trainers and physical therapists are the best first choice for concussion education for student athletes and their families in the tri-state area.
Overland Park, KS (PRWEB) May 12, 2012

Dr. Ross S. Headley, was awarded a medal May 3 at the annual conference of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry in Washington, D.C. for his work during the past year with victims of domestic violence. Working through the Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program, Dr. Headley, an Accredited Member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, volunteered his time, resources and skills to change lives of domestic abuse victims.

The Give Back A Smile (GBAS) program is an American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry charitable foundation. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, it is estimated that 1.5 million people experience intimate partner violence each year. Dentists and dental labs who volunteer their time, skills and resources help victims of domestic violence by restoring their smiles. Victims of domestic violence (women and men) can suffer physically, mentally and financially. When physical abuse takes place, broken front teeth are common.

“Restoring a smile is a healing experience and a major step toward restoring self confidence and hope for their future,” says Dr. Headley. “Helping victims of domestic violence has been a rewarding experience for me as well as my entire staff. Each of my staff members is educated on domestic violence and is extremely professional in interacting in a compassionate and caring manner with these patients.” For a victim of abuse, the process of determining eligibility begins by contacting the GBAS (Give Back A Smile) at 800-773-4227 or going online at http://www.aacd.com.

Dr. Ross Headley has been changing the lives of patients through cosmetic dentistry for many years. His practice is located in Overland Park, Kansas. Visit his website at http://www.kcsmile.com or go to http://www.facebook.com/rossheadleydds to post a message.

Los Angeles, Ca (PRWEB) December 10, 2008

The Church of Scientology has created a series of drug education films, brochures, flyers, and anti-drug program materials which it provides to the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, a nonprofit organization that promotes and distributes these drug information materials internationally to government institutions, civic groups and schools. The materials are widely used by drug-free marshall programs.

The newest and perhaps most engaging element of this drug education program campaign is a series of 16 anti-drug public service films. Each film, produced by the Church of Scientology, graphically illustrates the effects of commonly abused substances like alcohol and prescription drugs, or illegal drugs such as meth, heroin, cocaine, crack, marijuana and ecstasy. View one of the anti-drug ads here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2AuG2ktQwY

Filmed in an edgy style that talks to young people, the public service films show the harsh reality of street drugs and drug abuse. The goal is to impact youth about teenage drug abuse and debunk common street drug hype such as “drugs will make you cool,” “you will not get hooked after the first hit,” and “drugs will help you party all night.”

Four of the 16 public service films have already won an Addy Award, which acknowledges exceptional advertisements, for excellence in creativity and execution. The drug education campaign ads have also won two Telly Awards, which honor outstanding television commercials and productions, in the Best Public Service Campaign category.

The efforts of California public officials to reduce drug abuse is often overshadowed by news of cross-border drug trafficking and the state’s dubious distinction of leading the nation in drug-related arrests. However, California is committed to tackling the drug problem. According to the State of California Health and Human Services Agency, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger channeled $ 3.7 million into drug prevention and related programs for the state last year.

Any group or individual wanting to do something effective about drug abuse or learn about anti-drug progams is invited to order these films and other educational materials online. For more information, go to http://www.drugfreeworld.org or contact the Community Drug Education Programs Coordinator for the Church of Scientology International, Wendy Beccaccini, at 323-960-3500.

St. Helena, CA (PRWEB) July 26, 2011

Stephen Lundin has been appointed Chief Development Officer for St. Helena Hospital Region. He will provide administrative leadership for philanthropy for the Napa Valley, Clearlake and Vallejo campuses, and executive sponsorship for the St. Helena Hospital Foundation in Napa Valley. Raising over $ 6 million annually, the Foundation is a critical source of capital for St. Helena Hospital Napa Valley, funding advancements in programs and facilities to benefit the community.

“Our hospitals rely heavily on the generosity of our friends,” says Terry Newmyer, President and CEO of the St. Helena Region of Adventist Health. “Steve’s work will focus on securing meaningful gifts that will allow us to truly achieve excellence on behalf of health delivery for our patients.”

After completing a BA in Economics from UC Berkeley in 1974, Lundin returned to begin his fund raising career there in 1976 as Director of Annual Giving, then as Director of Major Giving. In 1984 he became VP of Sales for Master Systems, a small software company specializing in fund raising applications for non-profits, where he gained national recognition as a speaker and writer. The company went on to become the largest of its kind in the West. He became President and CEO of the Alta Bates Foundation in Berkeley in 1992, and was later named the new CEO when Alta Bates merged with Summit Medical Center in 2000. Under his leadership, the Alta Bates Summit Foundation became one of the leading hospital development programs in northern California, raising over $ 140MM for the medical center.

Throughout his career, Lundin has used pioneering techniques, and a gift for inspiring people, to set and achieve visionary goals for hospital development. “What sets Steve apart is his ability to make fundraising truly an outgrowth of mission,” says David Duncan, Chairman of St. Helena Hospital Foundation. “He is not only very effective at creating partnerships with donors, but also at reducing the cost of fund raising, ensuring that each gift has the maximum impact.”

“Working with the community and staff at St. Helena is a tremendous opportunity,” says Lundin. “There’s such a spirit of support and involvement, and the scope of the initiatives we will be funding creates an unprecedented opportunity for individuals to make a real difference. It isn’t only doctors who save lives.”

Formerly a member of the UC Berkeley tennis team and still an avid tennis enthusiast, Lundin has run the #1 Celebrity Tennis Tournament in the country, which raised $ 5MM during its nineteen years. He enjoys spending time with his wife of thirty years, Mary Jane, and their two children, Jeff and Abbey.

MAITLAND, Fla. (PRWEB) January 17, 2006

Galvanon, the patient experience company, today announced that Newport Beach, Calif.-based Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian has implemented Galvanon’s MediKiosk™ at its new Sue and Bill Gross Women’s Pavilion to automate patient registration and create a paperless workflow for breast care and imaging center appointments. By using MediKiosk, Hoag Hospital has been able to speed the check-in process for 350 patients daily by reducing the number of paper forms that patients must complete by as much as 75 percent.

When patients arrive for an appointment at the facility, they can use the kiosks to review and update their latest demographic information, check-in for appointments and make co-payments. Staff greeters are available to assist the patient with check-in on an as-needed basis. Patients can also use MediKiosk to complete medical history forms. When used this way, Galvanon’s technology enables the use of adaptive screening, where users are asked to answer additional questions based on previous responses.

Since the initial implementation in October 2005, Hoag Hospital’s self-service approach has minimized patient wait times, eliminated the need for patients to fill out redundant forms, lessened congestion at the front desk and minimized paper storage costs. Additionally, staff members now spend less time managing paper, and have more time to devote to patient care. Workstations in locations around the Women’s Pavilion allow staff to track patient progress throughout the facility, helping to improve patient flow and create a more efficient care process. MediKiosk has also dramatically improved the quality of data collected at patient check-in.

“Hoag Hospital has a long-standing reputation for providing quality patient care,” said Raj Toleti, president of Galvanon. “By implementing cutting-edge technology like MediKiosk, Hoag will continue to build on its reputation for excellence and realize a wealth of benefits, from increased patient satisfaction to improved efficiency.”

Public relations is used differently by many businesses, however at it’s very heart it is about communicating a message. As Marketing Quotes works with thousands of PR companies around the UK, they are well positioned to be able to quickly direct clients towards PR agencies with medical PR experience.

A representative from the hospital in Wales commented ‘the NHS has gone through many changes over the years, good and bad, however we do need to find a PR agency that can represent Welsh healthcare issues, as we are a country with specific needs. We were overwhelmed by the shear number of PR agencies around, we just did not have the time to spend searching for ones that had medical and healthcare PR experience.’

Anne Richards (who works for Marketing Quotes) added ‘we were pleased to help the hospital to find a few medical PR agencies to provide some advice and help. We know thousands of PR companies around the nations, so are in a unique position to help locate a local agency with industry experience to help and provide a quote if necessary.’

Huntington, NY (PRWEB) April 15, 2004

Biolink Communications, Inc., a medical publishing and education company with special expertise in oncology communications, is proud to announce the launch of two new journals in 2004: Community Oncology and The Oncology Report.

Community Oncology is a new peer-reviewed journal that will focus on community-based original research, translational research, quality of care and reimbursement/practice management issues. Circulated to over 30,000 cancer specialists nationwide, the journal will provide a novel editorial approach that connects research discoveries directly to healthcare delivery. Community Oncology will launch in June in New Orleans at the 40th Annual Meeting of The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

“We feel this journal is going to strike a chord with many Community Oncologists,” said Anthony Cutrone, President of Biolink. “The field of oncology is faced with many pressing issues in the advent of the current Medicare Reform bill, which should not overshadow advances in treatment and care. What’s intriguing about this journal is that it will be edited by and written for the community oncologist. Some 80% of US cancer patients are treated in the community setting.”

The Oncology Report, coming in August, will be a comprehensive report of the latest advances in cancer management presented at ASCO and the other major 2004 oncology meetings. The journal will be presented in user-friendly, tumor-specific sections, and will have an original circulation to 12,000 Oncologists, Hematologists, and HEM/ONCs. “The amount of research presented at these meetings is growing each year,” said Cutrone. “In one book, The Oncology Report will fill a real organizational and referential need for our readers.”

Biolink continues to produce The Journal of Supportive Oncology, a peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research and bench to bedside reviews related to the palliative and supportive care of patients with cancer.

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. (http://www.mccarthy.com), one the nation’s top ten domestic builders, announces the promotion of Robert Betz to senior vice president for the company’s San Diego office.

Betz assumed this position following a six-month transition period working in tandem with Ron Hall, former executive vice president of the San Diego office, who recently retired from McCarthy after 25 years with the firm.

Having joined McCarthy in 1994, Betz has accumulated 18 years of expertise serving in various leadership roles for McCarthy’s Southern California Division, including project engineer, assistant project manager, project manager, senior project manager, project director, and most recently, vice president of operations for the San Diego region. In his new position as senior vice president, he is responsible for the financial performance and overall operations of McCarthy’s San Diego office. He will oversee client relations, estimating, office operations and personnel as well as integration of the company’s scheduling, safety and contracts departments.

“Throughout his career with McCarthy, Bob has demonstrated strong leadership abilities, together with a commitment to quality, safety, and construction innovation,” said Randy Highland, McCarthy president, California region. “He assuredly has earned our company’s trust and that of our San Diego clients, making him the clear choice to take over management of our San Diego operations.”

A 23-year veteran of the construction industry, Betz has played an integral role in the successful completion of 20 large-scale McCarthy construction projects in San Diego and Orange counties. He has been instrumental in establishing McCarthy among the top green builders in the region, and helped lead the division’s use of leading technology on jobsites.

Most recently, Betz has been directing construction for the $ 115 million UCSD Health Sciences Biomedical Research Facility and the $ 90 million San Diego Mesa College Math and Science Building. He currently is playing a leadership role for the new $ 35 million J. Craig Venter Institute, La Jolla.

Past San Diego projects for Betz include the recently completed $ 17.1 million LEED Platinum Miramar College Police Station and adjoining 828-car Parking Structure, the LEED Gold Allied Health Building at San Diego Community College, the $ 17.1 million UCSD Biomedical Library addition, the $ 22 million Salk Institute for Biological Studies East Wing Addition, the $ 33 million Lodge at Torrey Pines, the $ 33.4 million Estancia La Jolla Resort, the $ 26.5 million Rady Children’s Hospital Parking Structure and the $ 10.2 million Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas Parking Structure.

A graduate of California State University at Fullerton, Betz holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in architectural engineering from Cerritos College. He also holds certificates of Construction Technology, OSHA 500 Construction Safety, and OSHA 501 General Industry Safety from the University of California, San Diego.

Born and raised in Southern California, Betz currently resides in the North San Diego County community of Rancho Bernardo with Lisa, his wife of 15 years, and their two children. His personal interests include all types of sports, hunting, and freshwater fishing.
