New Report Identifies Top 20 Developmental Drug Candidates to Combat Global Antibiotic Resistance
(PRWEB) January 27, 2008
Piribo, the online destination for business intelligence for the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, has now added a new report which lists the top 20 drug candidates being developed to tackle the problem of antibiotic drug resistance. It also identifies where they are positioned in the pipeline.
“Antibiotics and Drug Resistance 2008 — Drug Innovation and the Strategy to Combat — Antibiotic Resistance Mechanisms” which is available at http://www.piribo.com/publications/biotechnology/antibiotics_drug_resistance_2008.html provides a comprehensive and detailed review of pipeline, emerging and current antibiotics and anti-bacterial technologies and their potential to provide more effective long-term therapies.
The report highlights technologies at the anti-bacterial mechanistic level which offer the greatest hope of success and points out which companies and research groups are developing new drugs and technologies to fight antibiotic resistance. It also contains detailed, recently published figures on antibiotic resistance, from more than 35 countries. For instance, it estimates that hospital-acquired infections in the developed world cost more than $ 32.5 billion, a figure that is higher than current global sales on antibiotics.
Analysts have stated that while definitive statistics are not available, there is a strong link between antibiotic resistant pathogens and levels of hospital-acquired infections. For instance, The study reports that in the US, 50-60% of all hospital-acquired infections are caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria. Some experts maintain that the vast majority of nosocomial infections are due to resistant pathogens.
Authors of the report identify more than 900 drugs, drug candidates and developmental compounds. These products are classified on the basis of their mode of action, developmental stage, activities and capabilities and by companies and research groups responsible for taking these activities forward. In addition, authors have classified them in terms of their importance and potential to combat resistant pathogens, as part of the global effort to find alternatives to current antibiotics.
